Scientific Accuracy of the Bible

Even though the Bible was completed 2000 years ago, it does not contain any scientific error. This might be considered a miracle in itself, since it was long before the invention of the microscope, the telescope, satellites, etc. Every other ancient religious writing (without exception) has certain unscientific views of astronomy, medicine, hygiene, etc. For instance, the Qur’an says in Surah 18:86 that the sun sets in a muddy spring.


The Bible is the only exception among these ancient writings and is trustworthy and true in every respect. Not only is the Bible free from scientific errors, it miraculously provides numerous scientific facts about the universe. These facts are accurate and given thousands of years before modern scientists caught up to it. There are many, but consider just a few...

The Sun
For many years scientists believed that the sun was the stationary center around which the planets moved. The Bible has always taught that the sun is actually on a circuit through space. In recent years, science has discovered that the sun is in fact on a circuit through space, just like the Bible said:

“Its rising is from one end of heaven, And its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.” – Psalm 19:6

The Shape of the Earth
Between 740 and 680 BC, when the rest of the world believed the earth was flat, God declared through His prophet Isaiah that the world was round. The Hebrew word for circle literally means “sphere” and this was written at least 300 years before Aristotle suggested that the earth might be a sphere.

“It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” – Isaiah 40:22

In 1492, more than 2000 years later, some people still believed that Christopher Columbus was going to sail off the edge of a flat planet. The Bible further declares...

“When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,” – Proverbs 8:27

“He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness.” – Job 26:10

The Suspension of the Earth
Early on, Hindus believed that the earth rested on the back of an elephant that stood on the back of a turtle that was swimming in an endless sea. The Greeks believed that the mythical god Atlas carried the earth on his shoulders. It was only after Sir Isaac Newton published his findings on gravity in 1687 that the Biblical record was confirmed and that the earth was proven not to be suspended on anything.

“He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.” – Job 26:7

The Stars
Before the telescope was invented, men thought that they were able to number the stars. The Greek astronomer and mathematician Hipparchus (190-120 BC) claimed that there were exactly 1026 stars. The astronomer, and mathematician, Ptolemy (±83 – 161 AD) counted 1056 stars and the German astronomer, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), said that there were 1006. The whole thought of the stars being uncountable was contrary to modern science until Galileo first pointed his telescope to the heavens in 1608, and discovered that there were a lot more stars than anybody had ever imagined, just as God had said through His prophet Jeremiah:

“As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.” – Jeremiah 33:22

Today, with the help of powerful telescopes and modern satellite photographs, scientists estimate the universe contains approximately 100 billion galaxies containing approximately 200 billion stars each. Carl Sagan (1934-1996), the world famous astronomer, said, “The total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth”. That is enough stars for every person alive on planet earth to personally own approximately 2 trillion stars each. Dr. Mark Eastman says, “Counting at a rate of ten stars per second it would take over 100 trillion years. Surely the host of heaven cannot be numbered!”

The Second Law of Thermodynamics
For a very long time (before the dawn of modern science), most people believed that the universe was unchangeable. Today we have to face the fact that the universe, in its present state is deteriorating. Modern science shows that, from the scale of the galaxies down to the scale of the atom, there is a universal, natural tendency of all systems to go from order to disorder (complexity to simplicity). From the Bible, written three thousand years before the emerging of modern science, we learn:

“Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed.”
– Psalm 102:25-26

Considering, once again, just a few of the many areas where modern science has proven that the Bible has always been accurate, you have to come to the conclusion that the Bible was inspired by God (2 Peter 1:21) and that it is reliable and trustworthy in a provable, scientific context. God created the universe and therefore knows everything about it and He has given us His word, the Holy Bible, to testify of the fact that He is the Almighty, Omnipresent, Omnipotent One.
