The Emerging Church (emergent church) is a diverse Christian movement that has been hugely influenced by post modern thinking and it seeks to “revitalize” the Christian church beyond modernity. There is no set rules or definitions and the focus is on personal experience, rather than Bible teaching. Selfishness, worldliness and man-centered worship is all cloaked under “authenticity”. Instead of teaching and believing the Bible, they are shifting the emphasis to personal encounter and interpretation of each individual’s faith. They advocate missional living, merges away from the Biblical model of fellowship and embrace mysticism (i.e. contemplative spirituality). They have a very flexible approach to theology and doctrine wherein individual differences are accepted and multiple perspectives are welcomed rather than one single interpretation. God's Word is not seen as the absolute authority. |
